But how do they monetise it?

Ive played WoT a bit, I wasn't inundated with ads and junk.

You can use real money to purchase gold in quantity as opposed to slowly accruing it in-game. Then you can convert that gold into experience or cash so all RL money does is allow you to grind faster, I guess, and many people are willing to do that. There are also package deals you can buy to get certain vehicles and goodies at a discount over the cost of grinding.

downloading the game right now.

So do i get to pick a starting tank or do i get some gay shite thingy?

If we're talking about favorite tanks, I've always enjoyed the Stuart in Forgotten Hope. Is it any good in WoT?

The M3 Stuart is a tier 3 light. The M5 Stuart is a tier 4 light. Both are lunchboxes on treads, armored with cardboard.

Monetizing the game isn't hard. A premium account gets you 50% more credits and XP, most of the guys I play with pay for prem. You can pay for prem tanks that are somewhat inferior to other tanks of their tier but make a huge pile of creds. I own 3 of those. You can also pay for decorative camo, customized emblems and premium ammo (used more fo clan wars). Lastly, you can pay for top trained crews instead of having to grind their skills to 100%. There are all kinds of ways to spend money on this game, and I've spent quite a bit.

What's "quite a bit"?

Are we talking similar to what you'd spend on an 'ordinary' title? Ie. £30 or so? Or are we talking 100's?

My Type 59 was $35 or so. I spent about another $10 combined for a Churchill and a T14 on sale. In terms of gold purchases, I've probably spent about another $50-60, most of which went to monthly premium account fees. So I guess I've sunk a little over $100 into the game so far. It doesn't seem like much to me. I played it morning noon and night for 5 months straight. After taking about a month off, I'm back playing again.

That one goes up the UK line, which is kind of a strange line of tanks. Not as strange as the French, but there are some really odd and bad tanks in there.

Ooh look, a pretty Holiday garage. It's a little dark, though. There are also fireworks going off in the background.

I'm really loving the M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo. I use the first turret because it is so much more well armored, and I use the 105mm howitzer instead of the M1A1. I sacrifice in dpm, but I can lay a hurt on tanks up to tier 8 and obliterate ones below 6. It's hilarious hearing the enemy rounds ping off me in this thing.

PWNAGE!

These were back to back games; first in my Pershing and then in my T-44. I'd never heard of the Spartan achievement before. I got that for bouncing a shot (from an SU-144-22) with less than 10% of my health left. I simultaneously hit and killed him for the win.

Spartan came in the last update. If you survive a hit with less than 10% life and then survive the round you get it.

I believe.

The Su-122-44 had 13 hp left and I was down to 129. The JgPanther was doing fuckall, just hiding in the hills and trying not to die. I started capping to lure the enemy out and loaded a gold round to be sure I had the best chance of penning him if he showed his face. At 96 on the cap counter, he appeared at my 8:00. I had enough time to traverse the front of my hull to about 30 degrees to him before he fired, and his shot bounced. Half a second later, I hit him in the lower glacis for the kill and the win.

Are you using any mods since the last update? I haven't seen an update yet that I like. Not keen on the AIO mod because of the stupid skull logo or whatever it is.

I use...

J1mb0's reticle: http://www.curse.com/wot-mods/worldofta ... s-reticles
camera zoom mod: http://www.curse.com/wot-mods/worldoftanks/camera-mod
accurate damage indicator: http://www.curse.com/wot-mods/worldofta ... -indicator
scope shadow remover: http://www.curse.com/wot-mods/worldofta ... ow-remover

I used to use Demole's damage panel because it gave a hits taken log. That no longer works in 8.2, sadly.

New tank! I bought a T29 on sale today, only 700,000 credits. I free XP'd the tracks and mounted the 90mm until I can upgrade the turret.

Good thing since the stock 76mm is freakin' horrible at this tier. The 105mm will be a game changer when you get it. Get hull down and rip shit up then laugh as they bounce off your turret.

I can now finally get a Japanese tin can....under Chinese control.

Not sure I entirely see the point of the Chinese tree, aside from, oh, 4 or 5 tanks out of the 17, they're all Russian copies.

And then out of the rest, the Chi-Ha will appear in the eventual Japan tree, the M5 is already in the US tree, and the tier 1 is another Ft-17 copy. The only actual "indigenous" tanks are the 59-16 (prototype of the Type 62) and the WZ 121, which is basically an upgraded T-55, with some design elements incorporated from the T-62, which the Chinese captured one working model of during their border clashes with the Soviets.

In a modern game, China has enough unique armour, but not in this time period at all. Well, at least I'll have some fun puttering around in the Chi-Ha, low tier games can be quite a bit of fun.

In other news, I finally got my King Tiger. It's nice to have a german tank with actual armour. Still is more of a sniper tank due to the low damage of its gun, but still, it certainly performs better than my Tiger (H).

I see absolutely no point in the Chinese tree. Even a Japanese tree is sketchy at best since they never really devoted much in the way of time or resources to develop their armor, but at least they had a WWII presence.

But really, the game is so flawed from the perspective of how most of these tanks actually operated that I guess it doesn't matter.

Jesus Christ!

My progress toward the 105 has been hindered by the fact that I'm shitty at playing heavy tanks. I've won 3 out of 12 games in it.

With premium I would've made 5592xp off the double. Without it I still made 3728. I nearly creamed my jeans that round. No one on the other team wanted anything to do with me as I sat there punching holes in everyone. Good times!
