Buy it. If you think you might be interested in this type of game then it's everything you will hope it is. It has become my most played game on Steam by a comfortable margin (About 600 hours).

It has all the trading, shooting, mining, exploring shit that you would expect but it's the SP/MP system and the community that makes it. Some of the stories that a mate who plays it told me got me totally hooked. In case you don't know, you can play the game in SP but at any point you can just switch modes into MP and you will appear along with everyone else. Or vice versa. So, go out exploring in SP and run out of fuel? Jump into MP, call the Fuel Rats (A player group) and they will come and rescue you. Some of their rescue missions are epic. There's guys who are months (real time) away from civilisation and they have been rescued. The realistic, 1-1 representation of the galaxy gives you a real sense of scale. I read about the Cats Paw Nebula in some article. Thought, "fuck it, I'll fly there". Took me 3 days and represents by far my longest "trip". I barely scratched our galactic arm. There's guys who haven't seen another player or even a spacestation for years real-time.

Here's a mind-blowing fact for you - Elite Dangerous players have discovered (ie. Visited and mapped) 112,000,000 star systems in the game. Which is only 0.028% of the systems in the galaxy and therefore the game. If you discover it first you get your name on it btw. If you're ever in-game pay a visit to the BLU EUQ IG-W C15-19 C system. It's got my name on it :D

You can also play with friends/groups. A bit like MP but invite only. Like a private server. I play(ed) with the Mobius group. It's a group about 100,000 strong so plenty of people around in the busier systems (like Sol for example) but PvP combat is not allowed. Means you can chat and do PvE stuff without worrying about the Murderhobos that plague many of the systems. Unfortunately there is a thriving community of guys in pimped out dedicated PvP ships who slaughter anyone they see. It's impossible to compete unless you're in a similarly dedicated warship so your only hope is to run.

If you get it gimme a shout. I might let you sit in the co-pilots seat of the Yawning Angel (my Federal Corvette) or the Gunboat Diplomat (my Anaconda).

Oh and it's a screeshotters dream. I should probs upload a few and post em. It's a gorgeous game.

I thought it was because he'd settled down and done a better job of adulting than the rest of us.

I suspect having and reading the same debates for a decade probably took its toll on his mental health too :D

A little bit of all 3!

Now everyone go and buy Elite: Dangerous and a decent HOTAS joystick. It's gaming nirvana.

Have just bought it for Holyboys 2.0 & 3.0, based on your recommendation.

Very interested in the SP/MP dynamic... That sounds like heaven to me.

I've been a bit remiss in hooking into this Game. My bestest bud and I used to play the original on BBC B Microcomputers in school when we were 10 or 11. And he's been playing the up-to-date version since it came out. So I've no excuse.

All sounds dangerously good.

If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvellous victory." - Howard Zinn

Yeah, that is somewhere between fucking sick and ideal.

The time sink factor worries me a bit. But if it sucks up your life, it shows its awesome.

I was gonna use the excuse that I don't have a PC, but it's available on PS4 so I have no excuse. However, I also don't have time. Not the time a game like this probably demands.

Lemme know if you need any tips. It can be quite daunting at first. It does NOT hold your hand. I ran the tutorial missions and then started the game and thought "errr.. what now?". Youtube is your friend in this regard. I followed a guide for the first few hours of gameplay to get me started - Out of the starting Sidewinder and into a Cobra IV. A little bit longer and I had a small trading ship, then the galaxy was my oyster!

The main starting tip is "never fly without a rebuy" (The insurance cost of replacing your ship) - It's a surefire way of getting thrown back to square one.

There's lots of lore and throwback to the original game. Lots of the community played it and both they and the devs honour it. You can even go and find CMDR Jamesons original Cobra Mk.III crashed on a planet (Oh and if you're a real nerd you can go and find Voyager I and II although they are motherfuckers to find given their size and distance from Sol now). Most of the ships in the game are based on their original wireframe models from that game. It results in a bit of a generic "wedge" shape to many but it's a nice link.

Lastly, they're still working hard on the game. While I have been playing (about 18 months) they have added 5 new ships and done a complete overhaul of the trading and engineering systems. An imminent update will completely change and flesh out the exploration and mining aspects of the game. This is on top of the monthly, or so, constant QoL improvements they make as well as the background story (the background stuff is something I have barely touched on. You can involve yourself in giant faction wars both AI and player based), the biggest of which is the ongoing Thargoid invasion. I'm not a Thargoid fighter (you need pretty specialised ships for that) but I have taken part in rescue missions, running refugees out of stricken, burning stations in my converted cargo ship. Was pretty epic actually... and it brought all the usual player based interactions - Guys doing the same thing getting in your way or helping you. Guys trying to murder you for laughs. Guys trying to stop the griefers from getting to you (Or you could just hop into SP and do it all unmolested).

That'll do pig.

The commander pack is shit but they tend to bundle that with the game. They do the same on Steam. It's the base game and Horizons you want.

You can play without Horizons but you miss out on a bunch of stuff, planetary landings and engineers being the main things. And if you want to compete you really don't want to be missing out on engineers - They can pretty much double your ships performance in any given department.

Oooooooooo kay.....

Frigging learning curve! Bit like ArmA, gotta know those key binds, I'm all over the place and it is hella tricky to keep a target in your sights, let alone hit it!

Yeah, it's pretty daunting to begin with. Make sure you do the tutorials. IIRC some of the combat ones are pretty tough so don't worry too much if you take a kicking in them.

As for aiming - gimballed weapons are your friend. Hitting with fixed weapons is very tough indeed and takes a looong time to get into. Turreted weapons are even better in terms of time on target but are a bit weak. Gimballed are a nice balance of strength and time on target. Keep the enemy in front of you and the gimbals will do the rest. All you need to worry about then is power and heat management :)

You reckon i just follow the vids and chip away at it like that? I think i'll read a guide too. You're just plonked in a ship and away you go, no idea what all the menus do, no idea where joystick button 7 is, etc....

Something that is already pissing me off (only played like 20 mins) is the sensitivity of the throttle lever, I can't smoothly select thrust.

Meh, I just need to persevere I reckon.

Does look yummy.

Still not liking this, have tooled around with settings etc. Is this normal Spandex? I'm trying to do that thing where you stay in the blue zone to manoeuvre, but throttle wise its kinda binary, full or nothing.

Ok, so I now use throttle on keyboard, and can keep it in the blue zone just sweet. Completely different experience. was a cool dog fight actually, me getting closer and closer and spamming my lasers when in crosshairs. Beat it on first go.

Deffo want to have throttle on my stick though. But for now I'm glad to be making progress.

Hmm, never had a problem with my throttle tbh. There's a setting somewhere which switches it between "zero" being at either 50% throttle (so anything less is reverse thrust) or 0% and then you need a button for reverse thrust. I much prefer the latter. Also, not related to throttle but to the learning curve - Make sure you have Flight Assist set to ON! For the love of God, have it turned on to begin with!! FA-Off has its uses but having it permanently off is only for the most hard of the hardcore!

As for the key/joystick bindings... I think the devs just assumed you're gonna change em all anyway. I did. Play around with it for a while then do a complete overhaul of your bindings. I even had to get some sticky labels and label some of the buttons on my stick to save me using the keyboard. I found that entirely using the stick kept me immersed better. In the end I needed the keyboard to type "hello"'s to other players and to search for star systems in the map and that's pretty much it. If you like I can give you a list or even send you my bindings (they recommend you back them up for every big update).

As for watching tutorials etc... Yes, yes and yes. It's by far and away the best way to learn IMO. I had my ipad open in front of me for my first 10 hours or so! I used this guy. He's a bit bumbling but he actually knows what he's doing and is quite famous/respected in the community for his achievements (He's pretty much the only person known who has hit Triple Elite in a Sidewinder):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQJZMW33KCQ&t=420s

He's done an updated version here but I can't vouch for this having never seen it. His old one might have stuff that was patched out or miss stuff that was patched in:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY8mr7L9LbM

(Just had a quick look at the new one, looks okay but the audio is abysmal. Like I say, he's a bit of a bumbling old geezer. Quite likable though.

The throttle thing turned out to be a joystick thing, sorted now, all smooth.

However, the Z/twist axis on my stick blew up for fuck sake, on a permanent full yaw to port. After some fucking around I have it on keyboard so it the stick doesn't perma yaw, thing is, as you dogfight, you need those slight adjustments. Fucks actual sake. I really dig on sweet controllers, so I am totally miffed. I'll get a new one, but theones i'd like are gonna be a hundred quid plus. Mother fucker.

Found a fix, aint gonna fucking happen...

Oh yeah, gimballed weaps make a massive difference, just beat that 2 ship tutorial where the are more manoeuvrable than me. Dogfighting can be pretty awesome. I'm tempted to start the game proper, but i'm such a nub I'd fuck it right up.
