No there was a hierarchy.
It was a three year school, so as a sophomore, You could expect gangs of seniors to grab you drag you into the bathroom prison style and jam your head into a toilet flush it.
The hierarchy of victims was as follows....
1). Top candidates for this were sophomores who had been formerly, big man on campus in junior high school (middle school). They even had a list compiled for these people were, seriously, so they could check off all the names.
2). The second tier where those sophomores who had not distinguished themselves in middle school, but once getting to high school had done something to make themselves stand out and come to the attention of the seniors.
3). The third tier were individuals who didn't fall into the first two categories, But just ended up being convenient victims, when no one from tier one or two were available between classes. (I was in this third category)
Lucky I was one of the few people that didn't fall victim to this disgusting and unsanitary pastime.
I did get grabbed a few times, but fought hard and was able to escape, against the odds, on the few occasions that happened.
The fact that I never fell victim to this had to be kept a close guarded secret, for If the seniors known this, I would have become a higher value target, and I would have had a hit squad hunting me.
And they actually had spies that would casually bring this up in conversation, and ask you about it, then turn your name in if It turned out you've been overlooked.
Other interesting facts, this was an activity strictly reserved for seniors. If you're a junior and attempted to do this to somebody, that you can expect to get a swirly, from a squad of seniors who would probably also beat you.
Swirly was when they didn't bother to flush the toilet beforehand, because for some reason you'd particularly offended their sensibilities.
Like I said I never felt victim to this, but some individuals got multiple flushings, based on their personality. Usually the people with the oversized egos. It was actually the reverse of how most bullying victims are selected.
During the sophomore orientation, the class president even had a portion in his speech where he informed us that this would happen to all the guys, and that it was no big deal everyone went through it.
Of course the next year when I was a junior, they finally cracked down on this, threatening to press assault charges against anyone involved in this activity. Which was quite a 360 move as the staff knew all about it and no one ever lifted a finger to save people from this fate previously.
And so the reign of terror ended.
The only other hierarchy I can think of was that unlike most schools where you have the jocks, and the partiers / druggies, at my high school everyone in sports were actually the hardcore partiers.
Because at the time the drinking age for beer and wine was 18, every Friday they had an FAC, usually the senior would come around and collect a dollar from you, towards the purchase of a keg, and then give you the code name of the party location.
Each location had its own code name, like the pit, the Parthenon, The Grove, The Grange, The flume, So you know where to show up and receive a red cup. They were all remote and abandoned locations that actually were quite large parties.
We didn't have any type of milk monitors or proctologist or anything like that. In fact we had an open campus and since you could drive as soon as you turn 16, you could just take off at lunch and drive to McDonald's or someplace similar. there was usually someone who give you a ride off campus, if you're so inclined, or you could hike to the nearest convenience store.
