Wife and I are seriously considering getting a doggy. Although we 'only' have a ground floor flat we have a large garden available to us and lots of good wooded walking routes and parks. We'd be looking at a rescue dog, so I suspect a permanent stable home is preferable to their current situation. We'd probably get a Staffy. Our 4 year old daughter would love it.

Lots of pros, lots of cons. What say you OP?

Don't get anything with even the slightest trace of Poodle in it.

Also, dogs are a lot of work. Be very clear that it isn't your dog and thus someone else can walk it every day and clean up its vomit, piss and diarrhea.

Also, dogs need company so if you are both working full-time, don't do it.

Staffy all day long. I was always brought up with German shepherd dogs.. Beautiful but very large.

Didn't really like staffies as I'd thought they were used by chavs as a status symbol and all the negative news etc..

I decided to get a Staffy after meeting one my mate recently had....

Best decision I EVER made. My baby adores people especially children.. She'll lick you to death.. Also the funniest dog I've ever had.. Never fails to make me laugh.. A personality overdose. She's beautiful.

Can you tell I love staffies?

Wife will do most of the work. Lazy bitch only works 9-3 Mon-Thurs and can pop home at lunch as she works locally.

^^This.

Totally wouldn't get a Staffy, they are great dogs but you are jumping in the harder end of the needs attention/energy/work spectrum.
How 'doggy' are you? If its your first, frigging forget a staffy.

Maybe a Jack Russel? They are cool as fuck and much less work.

I forgot I am home like 23/7.. She's never been alone and yes they require attention but they do calm down a little..............when they're around 8 :-?

Spaniels are mental.. They require proper training to get the best out of them as they are gun dogs. And then they're in need of loads of stimulation..

I would not recommend.

This is why I don't have a dog, as I like Springers and Collies, and I'm not a farmer.

I knew that was a troll Mullet.

Nope. Russels energy levels are really high. With baby in your house get as EASY as you can. Too high energy levels with not enough excercise leads to boredom. Boredom leads to misbehaviour and suffering. Boredom is a path to the dark side.
Staffies might be kids friendly BUT WITH SUFFICENT TRAINING.
It's all up to you.

They are happy and friendly dogs but do need stimulation. Ours vents it out with our another dog luckily because we don't have that much time to spend with them.
The red english cockers are mentally fragile. Stay away from them.

We would be looking at a rescue Staffy. Typically they will have been in foster care so there would be a good idea of their general temperament, and we'd be looking at one over 18 months old. There would obviously still be much work, but not puppy training work.

Agree with all of the above, we have the space for a dog but both of us are working full time so it's not fair on the mutt.

I love springer spaniels & had a couple as a kid but they just want to run all day long & don't stop that until the day they die. Great if you have the space (which my family did) and are young enough to try and keep up. The last one was 17 when he died & he was still running miles a day in the fields, basically he was either running or sleeping. I miss that mutt, RIP Doctor Flidges.

I had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel when I was a little 'un. They're normally not as crazy as the bigger spaniels, but this one sure liked his antics.

We have a King Charles crossed with whatever, and he's an awesome dog. Best dog I've ever had.

Pit bulls are one of the breeds that are banned in U.K.
