Slacks brings home 100 pounds of potatoes, which (being purely mathematical potatoes) consist of 99 percent water.

He then leaves them outside overnight so that in the morning, they consist of only 98 percent water.

How many pounds of potatoes does Slacks now have?

:-"

I've looked at your account Junior and can't see that it is locked out...

But then, I didn't know that accounts could be locked out, so what do I know..?

Your account seems fully active... Only thing I could do is change your account password and see if I can logon with it...

:-??

Sorry, didn't make myself clear, I have no idea what my password is as I've been logged in for years. Can you reset the password and I'll login and change it again myself. I only have access on my phone at the minute.

How many individual potatoes does he have? More importantly how much does each individual potato weigh? (Average if necessary.)

It actually doesn't matter how many potatoes he has.

10, 100, 1000, or even just 1 gigantic potato.

Number of potatoes has no bearing at all.

:D

One gigantic potato....wait a tic are you implying Slacks is manly enough to lift a 100 lb potato? Cuz he is totally not given he can't change a tire or put the right fuel in a car.

:D

So where I'm at is that after dehydration the solid mass is still 1lb. That 1lb represents 2% of the new mass. If 2% of new mass =1lb then new total mass must be 50lbs. But it was 100lbs before so that's a massive drop. This makes no sense whilst simultaneously making perfect sense.

50 lbs

As it was originally 1% not water or 1 lb not water and it afterwards would be 2% not water yet still 1 lb not water, I played around in Excel until X * 0.02 = 1 to find that X is 50. Then 98% of that is 49. There is probably a simpler way.

When you put it that way it does.

That's exactly what I did.

Well done to you and Slacks.

It's called The Potato Paradox, and is an example of a veridical paradox.

Blew my mind too.

It was explained to me as:

1% potato / 99% water is a 1:99 ratio.

So 2% potato / 98% water is a 2:98 ratio...

Or 1:49.

And you've still definitely only got 1lb of (non-water-based) potato.

So: 1lb + 49lb = 50lb.

p@:>
