February 6th, and Frasier's dad is the first well-known figure that anyone cares about, to die..?

Could be a lean year!

I think I've been to 4 funerals this year already (and I missed a couple). Time for us plebs to cough up our due i guess.

I was just assuming that given the title of her band's most famous tune...

...It was probably a bit early to call it.

Damn. I am so far removed from mainstream tv and media that I did not know of this. I always respected this guy. Whatever you may believe, to me he seemed one of the most sincere and thoughtful public figures I've observed in my lifetime. My grandparents were big supporters and often went into prisons to minister.

He is someone that has few critics and despite his strong views, was always willing to avoid the rhetoric and just be a good human being to everyone and the world.

Evangelical Christianity is not respected much anymore, but he was, to me, the best representative for them and me when I was a part of it.

To be fair, in the UK, Christian Evangelists have always been treated somewhat fairly.

You try not to be cornered by them at parties, and steer clear of them in shopping centres, but on the whole, I think everyone recognises that they're not really doing any harm, and are in fact, trying to bring a bit of good into the World.

It actually takes a particularly American type of televised obnoxiousness to turn an otherwise ambivalent Public against Christians... And as far as we know on this side of the Pond, Billy Graham was at the forefront of that.

I suspect that whilst he was one of the first, he was nothing like the worst of the breed that followed.

Still, now he's where he always wanted to be, with a completely on-side audience.

I do wonder if he's gonna get bored of preaching to the converted, now he's gonna be surrounded by them.

TBH, he's one of those people I figured must have died a while ago.

Still, suppose he was quite fit...

Interesting reading from Sir Ken's obituary:

He lived all his life (and died) in the same house in Knotty Ash, Liverpool that he was born in 90 years ago.

Which is quite inspiring.

Tickled me, anyway.

Yeah, it feels like Einstein has just died or something (by coincidence, Einstein was also 76 when he fell off his twig).

This hit me surprisingly hard; I've been a great admirer of Hawking since my student days...he was only ten years older than me and I have read pretty much all his work.
