Pickelhaube? So the French really did lose both World Wars after all. They're adopting German mannerisms and outfits with that.

You know the French won more battles than any other country right?

And you are still a virgin right?

Yet they've lost every war they've fought in the last 220 years when they do it themselves and don't rely on their allies to carry their sorry asses.

Napoleon, Crimea, facing the Prussians under Bismarck, Indochina, all failures and losses. Even when they do have allies worth a fuck, only once with World War One have they emerged anything resembling victorious.

Don’t Celebrate Bastille Day
Since I am writing on Bastille Day, I am prompted to wonder why the French—or anyone else, for that matter—celebrate this infamous date. After all, the “storming” of that royal keep in 1789 was the spark that started the conflagration of the French Revolution. Unlike the American Revolution, in which the rule of law and the institutions of civil society survived the change of governments, the French Revolution was one of the signal bad events in world history. It consumed civil society and the centuries-old institutions of civilization. It was an unalloyed triumph of the totalitarian spirit, and in this respect it presaged and inspired that even greater assault on decency and freedom, the Bolshevik Revolution, the opening act of one of the darkest chapters in human history. The butcher’s bill for the French Revolution is many hundreds of thousands. Soviet Communism was responsible for the deaths of tens upon tens of millions and the universal immiseration of the people whose lives it controlled.

Yes - the French Revolution was a bloody mob riot and was an inspiration for many other bloody revolutions around the world. Not exactly something that should be celebrated IMO.

The French are who helped you win your war of independence.

Still. Without the French in your revolution and without the russkies in ww2 you wouldn't have achieved the things you did.

:-? Well playing the Devils advocate for Foota.

It was actually Louis the XVI who helped us out against you, not the French mob that cut off his head.

As far as WW2, we bailed the Russians out, who’d have faired very poorly without the Western Allies involvement. Stalin’s plotting the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact with Hitler, and guaranteed eventual, Russian non interference, in the German invasion of France and Battle of Britain. Hence help cause the war.

:-? And as far as we know you were born in England, so your achievements also.

People always forget about The Thermidor when it comes to the French Revolution. Also known as Robespierre's Reign of Terror or The Terror most shortly.

It led to a multitude of wars, executions and very authoritarian moves. To such a degree that it and Napoleon's endless misery of wars actually led to the French welcoming back the monarchy in 1815. (Which they then disposed of in the 1848 revolutions.)

There is little reason to "celebrate" Bastille Day as a result.

Also, the American Revolutionary War was one the English could not win. They were bogged down in America and rapidly having world opinion turn into a world war against them. The French contributed actually very little to the actual outcome of the war other than boxing in Cornwallis at Yorktown and thus ending the war faster. Their contributions are vastly overblown by many seeking to put the American Revolution in some kind of diminutive.

The third best holiday after Christmas and 4th of July is May 9 and the Moscow Victory Day Parade.

Because you see all the shiny toys the Russkies have and their women in uniform. And occasional hilarity like last year they had a mobile SAM spontaneously catch fire during the parade.

There must be some sort of email alert system that could send you daily Thermidor reminders.
