Not exactly up to your standards (as it's only from a phone) but snapped this today as I drove out from the house. Nice way to start the day :)

Phones are actually great for wide landscape shots like this. Nice light!

If we are allowed to post phone pics, I have some crappy quality ones I can share.

This is last week looking west at sunset from a street in my neighborhood. Beautiful red skies this time of year.

Beginning redecoration of the home office...

I also had a Harvard printed out from an airshow that I just need a frame for.

Plane pics combined with little planes makes for good office.

I would drive for as long as I needed to to get away from that shit. Walking is good for you anyway.

This is the view on my drive home after getting off the I-5 freeway. You can see the snow from the beach.

Very confusing tbh...Why is there a 20 min limit on the curb and yet a sign that says you can park for two hours? :-??

So anyway, my 300 died fairly recently (well it works manually but AF is completely fuct) and I didn't want to throw money at fixing an old lens, so yesterday I picked up the new 300 PF. Fun as fuck to use, weighs only a pound and a half but still great quality. Had some quick playtime with it just now at the neighbourhood duck pond:

Love how f/4 just blows the fuck out of the background.

Tried it with the 1.7x TC as well for 500mm. It's not quite as sharp as the 200-500 at that focal length, but it's still quite good:

Image

I definitely won't be getting rid of the 200-500 anytime soon as it's just too fucking good, but I can see myself grabbing this little 300 anytime I am going for a walk without any specific photography in mind and just want a decent setup in case something interesting shows up along the way. My back will thank me...

Here is the size comparison:

Both beautiful pictures, I would defiantly take the lighter one for walks and such, much better for your back. I saw some deer (3) on my way home from work either Monday or Tuesday, they stood there as I stopped my car to said Hi deary, deary, and pointed them out to folks. I wish would of had a camera with me to of taken a picture. We have some pretty wild life around here. :)

Technical post for Sid, when he gets back. Non-Sids can safely ignore this post.

Loving the 300 PF lots. It’s amazing the power I can wield in such a light package!

I figured out the 1.7x issue with the lens - oob it was front focusing quite a bit and I needed to AF fine tune the combo... arrived at +13 for proper focusing at 500mm. Now it’s very sharp.

Comparing this 500mm combo with the 200-500, the prime result is slightly better so long as camera shake is removed from the equation.

Here are 100% crops from a bank note about 15 feet away:

Image

The 200-500 suffers from focus breathing so it looks slightly smaller here.

The downside of the smaller lens is it’s an f/6.7 compared to f/5.6 (the 1.7 tc is really a 1.66666666666...) and as I mentioned before, the 200-500 kicks ass in the VR department. If you want to shoot at 1/100s handheld, the 200-500 is a way better choice at it mostly fucking nails it. The 300... not so much, I need to shoot at 1/200 minimum or mount it on a tripod and use exposure delay mode as the mirror really fucks with it. I think this is more due to the weight and length of the lens rather than the VR tech being “worse.”

In other words, both lenses have pros and cons and there are situations where one would be a better choice than the other. Obviously being able to shoot at f/4 is a nice thing when light is low but you still need to keep up with the action of whatever you’re shooting.

In fewer words, owls on shady trails: 200-500; most other things where you don’t want to kill your back: 300 PF

Having both is teh recommend.

;)
